How to get a full motorcycle licence in Ireland?

  1. Go to DTTS.ie to get your theory test.
  2. Go to your tax office to arrange your learner permit (bring your eyesight report D502  – Specsavers will do this for as little as €15)
  3. Complete IBT (Initial Basic Training) with a registered instructor like me!

And your now ready to take to the road as a learner!

Aidan teaches all levels of riders from first timers to track riders.

And how much will getting a learner permit (provisional) cost?

The theory test will cost you €40.60. The learner permit (provisional)  will cost you about €25.

What age do I need to be to get a learner licence?

The first license you can ever get is an M and you must be 16 years old.

After I get my learner permit (provisional), what’s next?

Once you’re on the road as a learner (i.e. have learner permit (provisional) and have done IBT) you need to wait 6 months before applying for the full test. You can apply for the full test here.

What size bike can I ride with a learner permit?

There are 3 different licenses available and it’s a different age for each!
  • M motorcycle licence: you must be over 16 years old. It will allow you to drive a 50cc that can’t exceed 45km/h.
  • A1 motorcycle licence: you must be 16 years old. You can drive up to 125cc with a max power of 11kW (basically any 125).
  • A motorcycle licence: you must be over 18 years old. As a learner permit (provisional) holder you can drive ANY size (cc) bike so long as it is below 25kW and/or a power to weight ratio (0.16kW/kg). What this means, is that you can buy anything, and if it is over the limit you must fit a restrictor kit (this costs roughly €300).
It’s also worth noting that with a restricted A license you can drive a lot of big cc bikes without a restrictor. The reason is some of these bikes are below the power to weight ratio. Examples include even some big Harleys!

How do I apply for my full licence?

By clicking here.

What will it cost to sit my full test?

The driving test costs €85.

After I sit my full test, what’s next?

After you achieve a full license you still carry the restriction that I spoke about earlier for 2 years. There is no way to bypass this restriction.

So to summarize, what is the sequence of events to get a licence in Ireland?

  • Go to DTTS.ie to get your theory test.
  • Go to your tax office to arrange your learner permit (bring your eyesight report D502 – Specsavers will do this for as little as €15).
  • Complete IBT (Initial Basic Training) with a registered instructor like me!
  • And your now ready to take to the road as a learner.
  • Wait 6 months while practicing as a learner.
  • Next up is to prepare and apply for your full motorcycle test.

So, hopefully that explains How to get a full motorcycle licence in Ireland.
